1967 Junior Championship Final
In 1967 Ballyboughal Rangers were the most feared team in Fingal and indeed in North County Dublin. After participating in the Junior Championship Final in 1962/65 and 1966 these great players were "Sleeping Giants". When Mick Manning introduced Mick Coughlan to Ballyboughal he became the team's trainer. In 1967 Ballyboughal reached the Junior Championship final again. The semi-final, played on Sunday the 28th May 1967 at Rush, finished Ballyboughal 1-11 to St. Colmcille's 0-07. It is said that up to 400 people attended the training session in Portrane the Thursday night before the final, scheduled to be played on Sunday 16th July 1967. The "Sleeping Giants" awoke and became legends of our time.

Drogheda Independent Pre-Match Report - Friday 14th July 1967
By Ken O'Dea - Junior Final
Contrary to previous announcements the Junior Championship Final will take place at Swords on Sunday. It was previously fixed for Parnell Park, which seems a rather strange decision in view of the fact that two Fingal teams are engaged.
A carnival is in progress in Swords and I am informed that this was the reason why Parnell Park was selected, but this does not explain away the fact that two other venues in the area, Balbriggan and Oldtown, were capable of housing the final.
However, it now transpires that the carnival will not interfere, and this game has been arranged for Swords on Sunday evening and it should attract a record attendance.
The teams concerned are Ballyboughal and St. Maurs, who have qualified in an entry of over seventy teams: A very big achievement in itself and one which speaks well for the standard of Final football. This will be Ballyboughal's fourth attempt in recent years and they still have practically the same side in operation. If memory serves me correctly there are two exceptions, Willie McCabe and Pat Rooney, who are the babes of the side. Missing will be Paddy Barrett who is now just recovering from injury.
At the time of writing, all others have reported fit and with Leo Hickey back to his best form, they will be all out to win their first championship.

Evening Herald Post-Match Report - Wednesday 19th July 1967
Ballyboughal have at last won the Junior football championship when the beat St. Maurs 4-7 to 0-6 at Swords on Sunday. While the issue was never in doubt after the first twenty minutes, the result was not as one-sided as the score suggests - at least two of the Ballyboughal goals being the result of defensive blunders.
Jim Turner and Niall Scahill gave Ballyboughal a decided pull at midfield, and Leo Hickey was also in top form.
Others to shine were Pat Killarney, Tom O'Hare, Willie McCabe, Brian Killarney and Tom Barrett, while best for St. Maurs were Tobber Ryan, Aidan Halpin, Jimmy Martin and Frank Gallagher.
Scorers for Ballyboughal: T. Barrett (0-2), N. Scahill (1-1), J. Turner (0-2), P. Rooney (1-0), B. Killarney (0-2), W. McCabe (0-1) and A. Ryan (0-1).

Drogheda Independent Post-Match Report - Friday 21 July 1967
After reaching the final for the last three years, Ballyboughal have at last secured the Junior Championship for 1967, at the expense of another final side - St, Maurs of Rush.
Fore and aft the winners were a better-balanced side. They were the more composed for the occasion and perhaps memories of past defeats at the last hurdle did not appear to affect them in the least and they were the more direct in their approach.
In defence Lee Hickey gave one of his best displays for a long time and definitely gave the rest of the side the necessary inspiration when it was needed most, during strong bouts of pressure from their opponents.
In the halfback line Noel Hickey and Tom O'Hara held their opposite numbers very well and at mid-field Jim Turner ruled the roost for most of the hour. Their attack on the whole, although perhaps assisted by couple of easy goals, was very effective. They made full use of all their opportunities and in it singled out Noel Scahill and Pat Rooney for special mention, I am not belittling the rest of the line, who played their part very well indeed. The selection of Tom Barrett at full forward was a match winner.
So much for the winners, who on the day's play, richly deserved their victory that few will begrudge them.

1968 Intermediate Championship Semi-Final and Final
On the back of the success of the 1967 Junior Championship title, the following year Ballyboughal Rangers pushed onward. On Sunday the 26th of May 1968 Ballyboughal met Craobh Ciaran in the Intermediate Championship semi-final. After seeing off Craobh Ciaran in a tight match which ended Ballyboughal 1-6 to Croabh Ciaran's 0-7 the way was clear for the Intermediate Championship final against St. Sylvester's. The game, held in Swords on Sunday the 7th of July 1968, was a scrappy affair and resulted in a draw. The replay, played on Sunday 26th of August 1968 ended with Ballyboughal Rangers being crowned Intermediate Championship winners by a 6 point margin of 1-10 to St. Sylvester's 0-7.

Drogheda Independent Inter Semi-Final Match Report - Friday 31st May 1968
By Ken O'Dea - Intermediate Semi-Final
There was a big gathering at the Swords venue on Sunday evening and they were well rewarded with a top-class programme, the highlights being the "Clash of Ballyboughal and Craobh Ciaran" in the Intermediate Championship semi-final. This produced a top-class game of typical Championship football. A fast pace was set from the start and Ballyboughal raced into the lead when Mick Manning landed a neat point. In a quick return both sides were on terms when Eamon Flynn had a point. We now had a spell of fast, even exchanges and when Mick Coughlan put Ballyboughal on front again they were forcing the pace. Ballyboughal were having a slight pull at midfield and it was no surprise when Noel Scahill put them further in front.
On the change of ends Ballyboughal continued to show up best and J. Turner increased their lead with a point and Noel Scahill followed with a similar score shortly after. Hereab0outs Craobh Ciaran put in a good rally and tacked on three quick points to put the sides again on level terms. We now had some great exchanges and Coughlan who was having a great game at midfield put Ballyboughal again in the attack and a neat bout of combined play followed. A. Ryan sent in a hard drive which was handled by the goalkeeper but Turner was in like a flash to send the ball over the line and the Ballyboughal men were again on top as Scahill dropped over another point.
Time was now running out and Craobh Ciaran made great efforts to save the game. M. Swan had a point and Dempsey followed with another, but Ballyboughal had a great finish to win on the score of Ballyboughal 1-6 and Craobh Ciaran 0-7.
Leo Hickey came back to his brilliant best at full back for the winners. Mick Coughlan was superb at midfield, while Jim Turner and N. Scahill were always alert in attack.

Drogheda Independent Inter Final Match Report - Friday 12th July 1968
By Ken O'Dea - Intermediate Final
There was a big gathering at the Swords venue on Sunday evening, where St. Sylvester's and Ballyboughal met in the Inter final. It was by no means a classic and both sides had two players sent off- one each in the first half and the same again in the second. Justice was however done as both sides finished level after the hour to resume the exchanges on another date soon.

Evening Herald Inter Final Replay Match Report - Wed 28/8/68
"Attendance records were shattered at Parnell Park"
The Dublin Junior Board's double-decker programme at Parnell Park last Sunday, as expected, drew a record attendance. Ballyboughal gained entry to senior ranks by defeating St. Sylvester's while Ballyboden Wanderers recaptured the Junior football title after a lapse of forty years by beating Colmcilles of Swords.
While neither match provided the classic football of the drawn encounters, the Intermediate tie in particular provided good entertainment for the record crowd. Indeed, the attendance exceeded the totals of the drawn matches and was a 50% increase on the Junior Board's record set by Ballyboughal and Garristown in the 1965 junior final.
Ballyboughal set a hot pace from the start and led by four points to one after ten minutes. However, Sylvester's began to settle down and had reduced arrears to a point at the interval. The standard of play reached a high level after the interval and it appears as if another draw was on the cards. It was at this stage that Ballyboughal veteran Paddy Barrett took a hand, finishing N. Scahill's centre to the net and from the that point onwards the result was never in doubt.
Scorers for Ballyboughal: P. Barrett (1-0), Pat Rooney (0-3), Noel Scahill (0-3), W. McCabe, B. Killarney, M. Coughlan and J. Turner all (0-1).

Drogheda Independent Inter Final Replay Match Report - Fri 30/08/68
By Ken O'Dea - Intermediate Final Replay
Ballyboughal won last season's Junior Champions and followed this up by capturing the Intermediate title at the expense of St. Slyvester's in their replay at Parnell Park.

Ballyboughal 1-10    St. Slyvester's 0-7

When Ballyboughal where in possession, helped particularly in the opening half by superb fielding, they indulged in fast open exchanges which brought valuable scores.
In this respect in my mind they out-shone their rivals. They had the better share of exchanges at midfield and their defence covered up well and left their opponents with little scope for attack. Ballyboughal led by 0-5 to 0-4 at half time. A point by Scahill at the restart was followed by a point from Pat Rooney. St. Sylvester's then scored a few more points. Again in attack Pat Rooney had a hard shot blocked by the goalkeeper and Paddy Barrett notched in the rebound. Four points in front Ballyboughal now turned on the steam and points from Turner and Coughlan followed by a point from Scahill left Ballyboughal winning by 1-10 to 0-7.

1972 Intermediate Championship Final
On the 16th of July 1972 Ballyboughal Rangers again found themselves contesting an Intermediate Championship final. This time the rivals were in the form of St. Brendan's Grangegorman. Ballyboughal edged the contest with a narrow one point victory over St. Brendan's. The final score was Ballyboughal's 1-7 to St. Brendan's 0-9.

Drogheda Independent Inter Final Match Report - Friday 21st July 1972
By Ken O'Dea - Intermediate Final
"Ballyboughal are back in the senior ranks!"

They made this assured when they had a narrow but deserved victory over St. Brendan's Grangegorman in the final of the Inter. Championship at Parnell Park on Sunday evening. It was a very good game with plenty of good football and for long spells there was little between the sides. With minutes to go it shaped like the senior experience of the Grangegorman side would win the day.
But true to tradition Ballyboughal came back with a bang, for Mick Coughlan to slam home a most important goal which left his side winners by 1-7 to 0-9.

Evening Press - Wednesday 19th July 1972
(The finish recalled the closing seconds of the 1970 final between Ballyboughal and Garristown. Ballyboughal on a two-point lead were beaten by the second-last kick of the game. A free to Garristown, which though miss-kicked hit a hard piece of earth and ricocheted to the top of the net to make Garristown lucky Champions.)

On the day's play Ballyboughal were the better-balanced team. Always on the ball, they were triers for the entire period. Brendan's however, contributed some neat football but they could not cope with superior team spirit.
The early stages favoured Ballyboughal and it was not surprising when Pat Rooney gave them the leading point, but they missed a couple of likely chances before Brendan's settled in for the equaliser. It was touch and go for long spells and then Brendan's' forged to the front with well-taken points. Ballyboughal reduced the lead with a point and their defence was seen to great advantage thwarting many good efforts. The pace continued fast and the Grangegorman side were having a slight edge and they tacked on two more points to make the half time score St. Brendan's 0-6 Ballyboughal 0-2.
On the change of ends Brendan's stretched the lead but thereafter Ballyboughal took a tight grip on the game and they steadily reduced the arrears. Still with as many minutes to go the Ballyboughal side were two points in arrears, when a great burst brought the all-important score for the winners.

Ballyboughal 1-7    St. Brendan's 0-9

Scores for Ballyboughal: M. Coughlan (1-0), N. Scahill (0-3), V. Daly (0-2), S. Farrelly (0-1) and P. Rooney (0-1)
